The Rangiora RSA Club entrance on Victoria Street

Since 1919

Our Story

More than a century of service, camaraderie and community in Rangiora and the wider Waimakariri District.

Rangiora Returned Services Association Inc.

Born from service, built for community

Early records of the Association have been lost, but it is known that on 28 July 1919 a meeting was held to form a branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, presided over by the Mayor, Mr C. I. Jennings. The branch was formed to include Sefton, Ashley Bank, Loburn, Fernside and Cust - and with more than 100 members it quickly became a separate, incorporated Association.

1919

The Association is founded

28 July: the founding meeting is held. On 20 October the Secretary advises the Registrar of Incorporated Societies that, with over 100 members, a separate Association will be formed. Incorporation is lodged on 5 December 1919.

1934 – 1969

Generations of service

Membership stands at 138 in 1934. By 1969 the roll includes 56 WWI members, 282 WWII members and 12 honorary members - and by resolution, all 56 WWI members are conferred with Life Membership.

1971 – 1972

The Club is chartered

A proposal to form a Chartered Club is tabled at the 1971 AGM. A postal vote returns 181 members in favour. After delays - including objections from local publicans - the Charter is granted in June 1972 and the Rangiora RSA Club is formed.

1981

Membership opens up

The first "Service members" are admitted. Previously, membership required overseas service in time of hostilities. Today, anyone who has taken the Oath of Allegiance and served in the Armed Forces at any time - including compulsory military training, National Service, Territorials, Regular Force and Police - is eligible.

2010

Growth after the earthquakes

Following the Canterbury earthquakes, the club grows to become one of the best RSA Clubs in New Zealand.

2016

$4 million extension

The club committee invests $4M to extend and modernise the building - two large private function rooms, a large gaming room with 18 modern machines, a sports area with pool and darts, Sky TV, ATM and TAB facilities.

2020

4,000 members and growing

Membership grows to over 4,000, with members of all ages - which bodes well for the future. The club takes the Spitfire Restaurant in-house; it is open every day and attracts diners and groups celebrating special occasions.

Today

The club for everyone

A great community facility attracting business and community groups, families and friends - while continuing to honour and support those who have served.
